Oroville declares itself ‘non-sanctuary’ city | Collier Hardware closing, auctioning off equipment | When will Annie’s Glen reopen?
Oroville is joining other cities in California in declaring itself a “non-sanctuary” city. Council members approved the resolution last night. Council members approved the resolution on Tuesday night. Also, the historic Collier Hardware store in downtown Chico is closing and has begun auctioning off equipment, and Annie’s Glen in Bidwell Park was closed to the public in October. Barber Yard project aims to bring new housing closer to downtown | Chico sewing community reacts to Joann closure | Smart Growth Advocates aim to mobilize Chico residents with public forums
While new housing developments in the Chico area tend to be on the outskirts of town, the Barber Yard project would be closer to the city’s center. The project is currently in the community review phase and has several environmental impacts to consider. Also, Chico’s sewing community is mourning the loss of Joann, and Smart Growth Advocates hosted a forum last week where several speakers gave presentations on how Chico can grow.

North State veterans speak out against VA job cuts | Bidwell Mansion arsonist sentenced to 11 years in prison | Regional cancer center to expand treatment
The Trump administration says it plans to fire 70,000 Veterans Affairs (VA) employees and that doesn’t sit well with veterans who depend on the medical care the VA delivers. Also, the man guilty of burning down Bidwell Mansion in Chico appeared in court yesterday and was sentenced to 11 years in prison, and three cancer treatment centers in Redding are being consolidated into a central location. The Sierra Pacific Regional Cancer Center just broke ground, and plans to open in summer 2026.

At its meeting this week, the Chico City Council created an ad hoc committee dedicated to reducing homelessness. Also, President Donald Trump is preparing an executive order that would dismantle the Department of Education, and Chico will soon be replacing many yield signs with stop signs around the city.

Chico’s anti-camping laws compared to San Jose’s | Emergency preparedness audit discussed years later | Gray wolves and North State livestock
A proposal in San Jose would punish unhoused residents who refuse the offer of shelter more than three times. It’s a move to address unhoused residents who don’t accept shelter — a problem the City of Chico is also working to solve.. Also, a report released by the state auditor five years ago that pointed to deficiencies in Butte County’s emergency preparedness was just discussed, and a new report from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said gray wolves were responsible for the deaths of 16 cattle at the end of 2024.
