Manuela Tobias
Manuela is the housing reporter for CalMatters. Her stories focus on the political dynamics and economic and racial inequities that have contributed to the housing crisis in California and its potential solutions. Manuela previously covered income inequality and survival at The Fresno Bee for the California Divide. She is a former staff writer for PolitiFact and has interned at Politico Magazine, New York Magazine and The New Yorker. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, she has lived in Latin America, Europe and across the theUnited States. She has a B.A. in comparative literature from Georgetown University.

Nigel Duara joined CalMatters in 2020 as a Los Angeles-based reporter covering poverty and inequality issues for our California Divide collaboration. Previously, he served as a national and climate correspondent on the HBO show VICE News Tonight. Before that, he was the border correspondent at the Los Angeles Times based in Phoenix, deployed to stories across the country. He is a longtime contributor to Portland Monthly magazine and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Montalvo, a bilingual reporter, covered the food and agriculture industries, Indigenous issues, and Mexican American culture as a freelancer, with bylines in Civil Eats, L.A. Taco, and more.

Erika recently graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a B.A. in journalism. During her time at CSULB, she worked as the senior print editor and writer for the school magazine, DIG MAG. Prior to graduating, Erika spent almost 9 years working in the banking industry. As a first-generation California native, she aims to use her experience to report on underrepresented communities throughout the state. Erika currently resides in Long Beach, California.

Caleigh Wells is a reporter and producer from Los Angeles. She co-hosted KCRW’s Wasted series, and has recently covered the local 2020 elections, the rollout of COVID vaccines and California’s wildfires. When she’s not reporting, she’s filling in for her colleagues on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Press Play and Greater LA. She regularly reports on environmental issues and climate change. Before coming to KCRW, she reported and produced for the other NPR member station across town, KPCC.

Joe is the K-12 education reporter for CalMatters. His stories use data to highlight inequities in California’s public schools. Before joining CalMatters in June 2021, he was the education reporter at KPBS, the public media station in San Diego. Previously, he covered the schools in the Coachella Valley for The Desert Sun, a daily newspaper in Palm Springs. He has a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Irvine and a master's degree from Columbia Journalism School.
