NSPR News Brief: May 5

Here's your daily briefing...

Loyalty’s Rewards?: After a good amount of hemming-and-hawing by most of the Republicans remaining in California’s congressional delegation, every single Republican house member followed party leaders and gave ‘ObamaCare’ the heave-ho. While the North State’s Doug LaMalfa represents a ‘solidly Republican’ district and is practically assured re-election, other California Republicans may face longer odds next November.

Gas Tax Battle—The Sequel: Perhaps proving that nothing in politics is ever really over, a Republican assemblyman launched an effort to strike down the recently approved deal raising taxes on gasoline and adding a new yearly vehicle registration fee for road repairs. Before giving voters a chance to knock it down, opponents will have to gather the signatures of 350,000 registered voters.

Your Vote Might Actually Count in 2020: Here’s more proof that everything old is new again. Legislators in both houses Thursday approved legislation that would move party primary elections held in California during a presidential election year from June to March. The concept, which was tried and abandoned in the past, could give Californians a say in choosing the next president. Currently, Californians, who make up about 10 percent of the nation’s voters don’t get to weigh in until the contests are mostly settled.

Investigation Launched After Body Found: Siskiyou county sheriff’s deputies are investigating a possible homicide after the body of an adult was found in a cabin located off of Big Canyon Drive near Mt Shasta. Authorities said there were no immediate signs of foul play or a struggle. The person’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Body Recovered, Identified: The Siskiyou County sheriff’s office announced that it has positively identified the body of a man pulled from the Klamath River near Happy Camp Thursday as 42-year-old Benjamin Arthur Camerena, who was reported missing April 14. A witness reported seeing a body in the river that day, but officials were unable to find it. Camerena’s disappearance and death are being investigated as suspicious.

And on the California Report:

Trump's 'Religious Freedom' order gets mixed reaction in Southern California…New bill pushes for better jail conditions as ICE seeks to increase deportations…What does new GOP health bill mean for Californians?... Growing or selling pot? California has some new rules for you.
