Flooding Causes Evacuation Orders As Rain Continues

While rain is subsiding in the valley, substantial flooding is underway as moderate to heavy rain continues across the foothills and higher elevations.  

 

Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 is being rerouted through the off and on ramps at South Avenue in Corning due to flooding.  

 

State route 36 is closed in Carlotta due to flooding.  

 

Authorities say Cache Creek is expected to reach flood stage early this afternoon potentially impacting flood prone areas north of Woodland in Yolo County. 

 

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation warning for Richvale and vicinity from the Sacramento River to highway 99 and from Nelson Shipee Road to highway 162 due to expected flooding.  

 

Highway 162 is closed from 1st street in Willows to Road P and from the Butte County line to Aguas Frias Road. 

 

Scores of main and secondary roads across the valley remain closed due to flooding. Authorities warn drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roadways. Water may appear deceptively shallow but can still wash vehicles off of roads.   

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in 21 counties, including Shasta, Tehama, Trinity and Yolo. 

 

Emergency levee repairs are underway near Hamilton City where the Sacramento River is expected to surpass flood stage. Workers overseen by the Department of Water Resources are adding sandbags and other materials to reinforce the levee according to the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office.

 

The US Army Corps of Engineers issued a contract for upgrading the levee and building an additional levee, set back further from the river, in 2015. Authorities insist the levee is not in imminent danger and no evacuations have been ordered.
