COVID-19 Test Site Opens At Chico State

A new COVID-19 testing site opened this week at California State University, Chico.

Located at Shurmer Gym, Butte County Public Health says it’s the second state-sponsored site in the county.

Tests are free and offered Thursdays and Fridays by appointment only.

Mike Guzzi, director of the Emergency Operations Center at Chico State, says the site is open to the public but is targeted for students, faculty and staff.

Guzzi says later this month, the school will offer another testing option through a third-party vendor on Mondays.

“We want to be much more aggressive and proactive in our responses,” Guzzi said. “Now we have a plan to offer testing in robust fashion that will be much more proactive and give us much more leading indicators to help curb the spread when it occurs or if it occurs.”

Local health officials say there’s also hope the new site will improve the county’s COVID-19 test rate, which is measured by the state for reopening purposes.
