The face of Chico’s leadership could see a big change come November.

Four seats for city council are up for re-election and residents can now begin the candidate nomination process.

The city sent out a press release this week to notify residents of the upcoming municipal election that will take place alongside the presidential election on Nov. 5.

Council seats for Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 are open to new candidates. They’re currently held by Sean Morgan, Dale Bennett, Mayor Andrew Coolidge, and Deepika Tandon. The city told NSPR that all current incumbents have the choice to run for re-election if desired.

Qualifications to run for an open seat include being at least 21 years old and being a registered voter who resides in the district the contender is looking to represent.

Candidacies also need to be verified. Some of the first steps are meeting with the city’s elections official, gathering resident signatures and other nomination paperwork.

The nomination period ends at 5 p.m. on Aug. 9. Those interested in running for office should contact the city clerk’s office.
