Chico Ice Rink hosted their second annual silent disco last night, creating a new local holiday tradition.

Bluetooth headphones were provided with entry. After lacing up, skaters got their groove on to one of three channels of music: either holiday, pop or funk.

People of all ages made laps around the ice while dancing quietly to their preferred jam. Even non-skaters enjoyed the vibrant evening.

The ice has to be resurfaced every hour, and the 7 o’clock intermission featured a special guest riding the Zamboni. Ms. Chico pageant winner, Makayla Mellinger, smiled and waved to skaters as the resurfacing machine cleaned and smoothed the rink top.

Afterwards, she was joined by Ms. Teen Chico winner, Gracie Yost, in greeting the disco attendees. Their sparkly presence brightened the evening as they smiled and laughed with the crowd.

“We’re so happy to be here and just having such a good time,” Mellinger said.

With the rink lit up in red and green and the plaza’s live 95 foot tall Redwood draped in white lights in the background, the iconic scene felt full of holiday magic.

Chicoans and residents of nearby areas have until Jan. 12th to visit the ice rink and create their own memories.
