The Paradise Town Council decided Tuesday to rename its chambers to honor the late Congressman Doug LaMalfa.

The room will now be known as “Doug LaMalfa Town Council Chambers.”

Mayor Steve Crowder introduced the item. He said LaMalfa helped bring in millions of dollars for projects like emergency alert sirens and also pushed to ensure wildfire survivors weren’t taxed on their relief payments

“All of that was a direct result of our congressman,” Crowder said. “Not that we couldn’t have recovered without him but it was a big boost and helped us really get started with all the help we gave.”

Vice Mayor Steve “Woody” Culleton opposed the change. He said he supports preserving LaMalfa’s legacy, but believes renaming the chambers doesn’t reflect the purpose of the building.

“It’s nothing against Doug, it’s nothing against honoring him and all the stuff he did for us,” Culleton said. “But this is just Paradise Council Chambers. The Town of Paradise. This is our chamber.”

The vote passed with Culleton casting the lone abstention.
