Prosecutors say Chico library shooting suspect Bradley Scott Sayer planned to kill himself after Monday's deadly attack.

That conclusion comes from a journal investigators recovered that belonged to the 18-year-old, said Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

"We do have his journal, his musings as he called it,” Ramsey said, “and rather dark musings as to what he was going to do, that he intended to commit suicide at the end of this.”

Sayer did attempt to take his own life as law enforcement responded, Ramsey said, but he was unsuccessful.

“Because of his unfamiliarity with the shotgun and its ammunition, that failed for him. And so he gave up to the police after that attempt at suicide,” Ramsey said.

Sayer was arrested after running from the Chico library and into a police perimeter that had already been established outside the building.

The attack killed Robert Johnson, 74, of Orland, and Jacob Hull, 46, of Chico.

Investigators say Sayer's lack of experience with the shotgun likely prevented even more casualties.

Prosecutors expect Sayer to appear in court Thursday on two counts of first-degree murder.
