Study sees decrease in homelessness following guaranteed monthly income | Butte County wastewater data show COVID-19 on the rise| Chico removes trees on Esplanade to make way for construction
An ongoing study is giving unhoused people $750 a month with no strings attached. A professor who helped create the trial told NSPR that so far the payments have helped many participants in Los Angeles meet their basic needs. Also, according to the CDC Wastewater Data Tracker cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in Butte County, and the city of Chico is removing 28 trees to make way for construction on the Esplanade.

The year in prescribed fire in Butte County | Rebuilding payment plans for North Complex, Camp Fire survivors may be possible soon | Polar Bear Plunge 2024
This year, at least 500 more acres in Butte County were burned with prescribed fire than last year. Also, burn scar residents could see a payment plan option implemented by Butte County early this year that would make it easier to pay for some rebuilding expenses, and yesterday marked the beginning of 2024, which for many residents in Chico, means a frosty dip in Sycamore Pool.

Paradise’s urgency ordinance allowing fire survivors to legally live in RVs was set to expire in April. Now, survivors have until April 2025. Also, One person is dead after an avalanche at Palisades Tahoe Resort yesterday, and more anti-camping enforcements are set to begin for some unsheltered residents of Chico next week.

Safe Space intake center will remain in church parking lot | PG&E Dixie Fire settlement vote postponed | Shasta County elections commission attempts to review recall petitions
Safe Space Winter Shelter says its intake center will be in the parking lot of Trinity United Methodist Church for the rest of the season following more than a week of negotiations with the city of Chico over a zoning issue at the nonprofit’s prior location. Also, a controversial settlement agreement between the California Public Utilities Commission and PG&E over the energy company’s role in the deadly 2021 Dixie Fire was delayed for a second time this week, and the Shasta County Election Commission has asked that the county’s supervisors to hire legal counsel to find out if they have authority to review election materials.
