Hundreds of students compete at Chico chess tournament | Sycamore Pool closed this week | New conservation nonprofit seeks to remove old fences that kill wildlife
Hundreds of students recently attended a chess tournament in Chico, making it the largest first-tournament in league history.. Also, Sycamore Pool in Bidwell Park will be closed for the next several days, and two Plumas County residents have formed a nonprofit to remove outdated fencing that can entangle and kill migrating wildlife.

Meet Katie Hawley for District 5 Chico councilor | Potential PG&E shut off this week | Chico State receives $8.5M for teacher residency program
NSPR spoke with candidates running for Chico City Council this fall. Today we hear from Katie Hawley who is running against Melissa Lopez-Mora. Also, PG&E is warning of potential power shutoffs for around 30 counties later this week to prevent wildfires, and the U.S. Department of Education awarded Chico State with an $8.5 million grant to support placing aspiring teachers in residency programs across rural Northern California.

Shoe Fire causing unsafe air quality | Trinity County to help with Hurricane Helene | Chico State showcases ‘The Screenprint Biennial’
The Shoe Fire burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is nearly 4,000 acres. Smoke from the fire has created unsafe air conditions across Shasta County. Also, the Trinity County Board of Supervisors voted to name the North Carolina town of Weaverville its sister city and is pledging aid to help the city recover from Hurricane Helene. And "The Screenprint Biennial," a New York City-based exhibition, celebrates a decade of showcasing innovative screenprinting designs at Chico State.
