Byrhonda Lyons is a national award-winning video journalist for CalMatters. She creates compelling multimedia stories about how California policy affects people’s everyday lives. From the state’s mental health crisis, to an investigation into shady state contractors, her work aims to hold politicians accountable and educate Californians about the ins and outs of their state government. Byrhonda’s work has appeared on the PBS NewsHour, KPBS, KVIE-PBS, and local television stations throughout California. She’s won a National Headliner Award for her work during the 2018 elections. She has also received several awards from the California News Publishers Association (CNPA).

Mikhail Zinshteyn has been a higher education reporter since 2015. As a freelancer, he contributed to The Atlantic, The Hechinger Report, Inside Higher Ed and The 74. Previously, he was a reporter at EdSource and before that a program manager at the Education Writers Association. Mikhail was born in the Soviet Union and has a master's degree in comparative politics from the London School of Economics. He is based in Los Angeles. Pell grants and work-study helped pay for his undergraduate degree at Union College.

Bert Johnson is a reporter and producer based in Reno, where he covers the state legislature and stories that resonate across Nevada. He began his career in journalism after studying abroad during the summer of 2011 in Egypt, during the Arab Spring. Before he joined Nevada Public Radio and Capital Public Radio, Bert was a contributor at KQED and the Sacramento News & Review. He was also a photographer, video editor, and digital producer at the East Bay Express. He also previously worked as a producer on Insight with Beth Ruyak.

Marissa Garcia is an Editorial Intern for CalMatters via the Dow Jones News Fund, reporting on science and environmental policy for her home state. She is working with Laurel Rosenhall. She recently graduated from Harvard University, where she earned an A.B. degree with Highest Honors in Integrative Biology and a secondary in Environmental Science & Public Policy. While at Harvard, Marissa was the Editor-in-Chief and Podcast Editor of the Harvard Independent, the oldest weekly newspaper at any American university. She has also written for NOAA Sanctuaries. She begins her Ph.D. studies in Natural Resources at Cornell University in the fall. Long-term, she hopes to cover climate policy, especially as it relates to ocean management.

A musical alum of Sac State, Jennifer is an avid performer in the community and host of many artistic events in the area. You may have seen her in her role as Artistic Director of vocal ensemble RSVP, Music Director and pianist for the Rogue Music Project (along with morning classical host Kevin Doherty!), or as pianist and founding member of Citywater, modern instrumental sextet currently Ensemble-in-Residence at CSUS (www.citywatermusic.com).
