Some of the most important and underappreciated parts of healthy ecosystems, invertebrates get their due in this special edition of Blue Dot profiling the work of the Xerces Society.

Named for a butterfly that went extinct in the San Francisco Bay Area, the society works on behalf of invertebrate species, especially pollinators like bees and butterflies which are under tremendous stress due to development, the use of pesticides and climate change.

Executive Director Scott Black joins host Dave Schlom for a brief history and overview of the Xerces Society. Then we focus on the species they work to protect with Endangered Species Director Sarina Jepsen, followed by Pollinator and Agricultural Biodiversity Director Mace Vaughan, who discusses the innovative ways Xerces staff engage with a variety of stakeholders to make better environments for these tiny creatures from back yards to farmlands and beyond!

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
