All 80 Assembly members and half of the 40-member Senate will take their oaths of office as the new California Legislature opens today (MONDAY).

Republicans won enough races in both chambers to break Democrats’ two-thirds supermajorities.

That gives them the power to block tax increases and constitutional amendments.

But Democrats still hold solid majorities in both chambers and have more than enough votes to pass the state budget and routine legislation without Republican support.
