Emergency managers from the state Governor's Office of Emergency Services meet at the scene of the Valley Fire in Lake County.

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in the Valley Fire burning in Lake, Napa and Sonoma Counties. It’s destroyed more than 1,000 homes and killed at least three people.

The declaration issued Tuesday releases federal money for recovery and cleanup.

Residents can apply for grants for home repairs and temporary housing as well as apply for low-cost loans for uninsured property.

The devastating wildfire started Sept. 12 and now ranks among the state's most destructive.

The Lake County sheriff said Tuesday that authorities continue to search for two men reported missing. They are 61-year-old Robert Litchman of Middletown and 66-year-old Robert Fletcher of Cobb.

His office has had reports of 15 missing people since the fire began.
