Anderson Chemical Leak Causes Brief Evacuation

Roads were closed and workers evacuated yesterday when chlorine and sulfur Dioxide leaks were detected at a sewage treatment plant along the Sacramento River in Anderson.

One worker at the facility, located within Anderson River Park, was treated and released at the scene after being exposed to the caustic compounds.  The chemicals are used to treat waste water. The leak was detected just after 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities said the leak was entirely contained within one building. Hazardous materials teams successfully capped the leaky tank after initially entering the building to assess conditions. All road closures were lifted shortly before 5:00 p.m.
