Camp Fire survivors are celebrating a new law that could help them get their full PG&E settlement payments.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday signed Assembly Bill 2700, which requires state regulators to look at ways utilities can make up compensation shortfalls tied to fires they caused before July 12, 2019.

A report from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is due by January 2028.

Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder says the law is a meaningful step for Camp Fire survivors who have received about 70% of their approved awards from the Fire Victim Trust.

“The fight’s not over now," Crowder said. "It’s in the CPUC’s hands, and we need to keep the pressure on the CPUC to do the right thing as well."

The commission will recommend ways for utilities to compensate survivors without passing the costs on to customers through utility rates.
