Housing Meeting Today Focused On Cost of New Construction

Suzi Rosenberg

The soaring costs and dwindling supply of housing will be front and center at an official city meeting in Chico today.

Several council members serving on a temporary committee will hear presentations from developers about some of the things, beyond labor and materials that go into the cost of a home.

Builders in California often lament land costs, regulatory and environmental processes, stringent building codes and permit fees.

Permit and impact fees on new housing are elevated due in part to 1978’s Proposition 13 which reduced property taxes on existing homes, and shifted costs on to new construction.

The meeting is scheduled for three this afternoon in the Council Chamber building at 4th and Main Streets.
