Shasta County Recall Proponents Say They Collected Enough Signatures To Hold Special Election For District 2 Seat

Recall Shasta, the group organizing recall efforts in Shasta County, said they have gathered enough signatures to petition a recall election for Supervisor Leonard Moty of District 2. The signatures came in at 12 p.m. Wednesday, just ahead of the 5 p.m. deadline.

Shasta County Clerk Cathy Darling Allen confirmed the group turned in signatures. She said the elections department now has 30 days to count and certify them.

If certified, the Board of Supervisors will work with the Elections Department to carry out a special election over whether to recall Supervisor Moty.

Recall Shasta had also targeted Supervisors Mary Rickert and Joe Chimenti. According to Darling Allen, the organizers said they did not receive enough signatures and would not be submitting petitions to the county clerk’s office ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. Supervisor Rickert said she hopes the county can move on.

"I plan on looking forward, not backwards,” she said. “I'm willing to work with anybody that wants to seriously take on some of the problems that we have to face as a county."

Recall Shasta had previously requested an extended deadline to collect signatures, claiming that wildfire smoke prevented them from collecting enough. According to the Redding Record Searchlight, that request was denied by Judge Tamara Wood Tuesday.

Supervisors Chimenti, Moty, and representatives from Recall Shasta did not respond to a request for comment on the recall effort by the deadline.
