Chico council members plan to tackle the safety of massage parlors.

Councilmember Deepika Tandon had put the item on the agenda for last week’s meeting, but council members voted unanimously to move the discussion to its internal affairs committee, which meets monthly.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 7 and the topic could be brought up then. Tandon said she wants the committee to discuss more oversight for massage parlors.

“I have heard it in the community that there could be incidents of human trafficking and things like that so it’s important to update our ordinances to make them safe,” Tandon said at last week’s city council meeting.

Massage businesses can be certified at the state level by The California  Massage Therapy Council. Tandon said there are some businesses in Chico without such certification.

She said she would like the city to follow state regulations that call for each massage business to be state-certified.

The topic will go to internal affairs for discussion and come back to the council at a later date.
