Election results for the North State continue to roll in, forecasting political change on a local, statewide and national level.
Although California election results will not be certified until Dec. 5, percentages released by county officials give an indication of the vote count so far.
Here’s a look at unofficial results for some of the most important races and measures NSPR has been following.
Chico City Council
Chico could see a more progressive council next year, as the latest election results show there will likely be a shake up. Preliminary election results show two progressive candidates are likely to win seats.
In District 7, progressive Bryce Goldstein is ahead of incumbent Deepika Tandon. Goldstein currently holds around 60% of the vote.
In District 5, progressive Katie Hawley is ahead of her opponent Melissa Lopez-Mora with around 73% of the vote.
District 3 is a close race, with incumbent Dale Bennett just ahead of opponent Monica McDaniel. He currently holds a 1 point lead, as votes continue to be counted. Bennett won against McDaniel last election by around 200 votes.
In District 1, former Chico Police Chief Mike O’Brien is ahead of his opponent Mike Johnson with around 55% of the vote.
U.S. House of Representatives
It appears North State congressional representatives will all keep their seats, according to The Associated Press.
In District 1, Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa has come out ahead of his opponent Rose Penelope Yee. The APress declared LaMalfa the winner early this morning.
LaMalfa has represented the state’s 1st Congressional District since 2013.
In District 2, Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman held his seat against a Republican challenger. Huffman has also held this seat since 2013.
Republican congressman Kevin Kiley from District 3 is leading his race by about 15 percentage points. Kiley was first elected representative of District 3 in 2022.
California State Races
The North State will send several GOP candidates to represent the region’s interests at the state capital. The Associated Press called a winner for several of these races.
Voters elected Republican Megan Dahle to serve on the California Senate for District 1.
Republican James Gallager will continue to represent State Assembly District 3.
And in State Assembly District 2 — which includes much of the North Coast and Trinity County — voters elected Democratic candidate Chris Rogers.
Republican candidate Heather Hadwick is leading her race to represent State Assembly District 1.
Butte County Measure H
It looks like Butte County voters have passed a measure that would implement a 1% sales tax on purchased goods.
Measure H is estimated to bring in $44 million in revenue to the county. According to unofficial election results, the measure is currently passing by about 67%.
Revenue raised from the tax will be deposited into the county’s general fund. Officials say the fund can be used for any county service including emergency, fire and library programs.
State Propositions
Prop 33 would have allowed local governments to have more control over rent control ordinances. The Associated Press reports California voters have rejected it.
If passed, it would have repealed the Costa Hawkins Act. That act exempts certain types of housing units — such as newer construction — from local rent control ordinances.
Californians are poised to pass Prop 4.
Prop 4 would issue more than $10 billion in bonds to fund projects to help make the state more resilient to climate change.
Those projects could include wildfire and extreme heat mitigation or funding for local and state parks. Current results show nearly 58% of voters approved the proposition with around 50% of votes counted.
Chico Unified School Board
Chico voters have likely selected two new progressive candidates for the school board.
As of the latest unofficial results, Gayle M. Olsen was leading her race for Trustee Area 2 by nearly 20 percentage points. Olsen is a former educator who promised that supporting students is her number one priority.
Teisha Hase is currently leading the race for Trustee Area 3 by 38 percentage points. Hase is a retired educator whose primary focus is school safety and mental health support for students.
Butte County School Bonds
Butte County voters weighed bond measures to fund infrastructure projects at local schools. Chico, Paradise, Oroville, Thermalito and Biggs all had bonds on the ballot for improvement projects.
The latest unofficial election results show all of those bond measures likely passing.
Oroville Measure Results
Voters in Oroville weighed several measures that would update its charter document.
Measure J asked voters to give the city council the power to appoint its treasurer, which is currently an elected position. Officials say the city’s finance director has been doing those responsibilities. Unofficial election results show that measure failing, which would leave that position as elected.
Measure K would have changed how city council members and the mayor are compensated. According to the latest unofficial election results Measure K is failing, with about 67% of voters saying no.
Measure M would update the City of Oroville’s aging city charter document, removing outdated language about meeting times and commissioner positions which no longer exist. The latest unofficial results show that measure passing with around 54% of the vote.
Voters also appear to have rejected a similar measure — Measure L. That measure would have removed outdated job duties and city processes in the charter document. It would have established the Parks Commission as an advisory board to the council, which officials say it is already doing. Unofficial results show around 53 % of voters saying no.
Editor’s note: North State Public Radio does not consider any results official until they are certified by election officials. We will continue to update election results on our website until Dec. 5, which is the deadline for county election officials to certify the results.
NSPR will monitor results for North State races on this page and on air.
