A homicide occurred at the City of Chico’s alternative camping site for homeless residents Monday night.
The Chico Police Department says it received an emergency call around 10:15 p.m. about a possible shooting at the site on Eaton Road.
Kayla Gates, public information officer for Chico PD, said officers found the victim inside the compound.
“When they arrived on scene they located an adult male victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound,” she said. “Officers rendered first aid and provide life saving measures, but unfortunately he did succumb to his injuries.”
Gates said the scene was secured and detectives and crime scene investigators arrived to begin an on-site investigation.
The city's alternative camping site is a camping facility for unhoused people who don’t qualify for other shelter space in Chico.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The department said this appears to be an isolated incident and there’s no threat to the public.
Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Chico PD’s investigations bureau.
