Rural Voices Day 2026: North State Public Radio invites listeners to share their stories

If NSPR has ever informed you, helped you during an emergency or told a story that stayed with you, we want to hear from you.

On March 4, we’re marking Rural Voices Day, recognizing the essential role public radio plays in the North State.

We live here. We work here. And we show up when it counts.

In the wake of federal funding cuts to public media, rural voices matter more than ever. Your story helps show why trusted local reporting is critical in the North State.

  • When has NSPR shown up for you?
  • Was there a moment this station helped you?
  • A story that stayed with you?
  • A time we were there when it mattered most?

How to share your story

  • Call 530-898-NEWS and leave a voicemail.
  • Or upload an audio message using this form.
  • Prefer to write? You can also share a written response in the form.

We may feature selected responses on air, online or on social media.

Emergency information is part of our mission

During the 2024 Park Fire, evacuation orders were issued for more than 100 zones across the North State. NSPR aired every one, repeating and clarifying the warnings to help listeners understand when to evacuate.

From the 2018 Camp Fire to the 2020 North Complex and 2021 Dixie Fire, we’ve provided critical updates, added context and followed up with in-depth reporting during the region’s most devastating emergencies.

Rural communities often have fewer local news outlets than urban areas. In many parts of the North State, public radio remains one of the most dependable sources of timely, verified local information.

Reporting rooted in the North State

NSPR is locally run and licensed to Chico State. Our journalists live here and report on the communities they call home.

We provide daily local news and cultural programming that reflect the people and stories of rural Northern California.

We’re committed to providing trusted reporting the North State can rely on.
