Blue Dot 134: Alan Stern & Brian May

David Schlom

Dave is joined by two rock stars on this very special episode of Blue Dot. Brian May is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist for Queen and along with his band mate Roger Taylor, was a creative and musical consultant for the Academy Award nominated Bohemian Rhapsody. But May is also a serious scientist with a Ph.D in astrophysics from Imperial College.

Alan Stern is the Principal Investigator for the New Horizons mission that flew by Pluto in July 2015 and the strangely shaped Kuiper Belt object Ultima Thule on New Year's eve. May is a member of the New Horizons science team with a passion for stereoscopic imaging.

Stern and May have developed a close friendship during the mission and you can hear it in this wide ranging conversation facilitated by Dave that takes us from the Academy Awards Ceremony where May and Queen along with Adam Lambert will perform, to the icy frontiers of the solar system.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
