Democrats Call For LaMalfa’s Resignation After Trump Supporters Storm U.S. Capitol

North State Representative Doug LaMalfa is receiving calls for his resignation over his decision to challenge in Congress the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

The criticism comes after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Wednesday and delayed the counting and certification of Electoral College votes.

Bill Monroe is with the Butte County Democratic Party and a regional director for the California Democratic Party.

He said LaMalfa’s stance amounts to “sedition.”

“I am shocked and upset and ashamed of our representative who supported this move to not recognize President Biden and Kamala Harris as president and vice president, and is therefore in league with these protesters,” Monroe said. “And he should, in fact, resign.”

Alice Rogers, chair of the Democratic Central Committee of Siskiyou County, also called for LaMalfa’s resignation.

“What we are witnessing in Washington D.C. is sickening and an attack on our country,” Rogers said. “For four years we have witnessed Congressman LaMalfa stand by this president, protect him and echo his lies.”

Rogers added that instead of celebrating the certification of a lawful election, “we are instead faced with one of the darkest days in our history.”

A spokesperson from LaMalfa’s office said Wednesday the Republican congressman was not available for comment.

In a prepared statement, LaMalfa said, “Violence, no matter by who or for what reason, is inexcusable and must be dealt with immediately, forcefully and with the full force of the law. The actions at the Capitol today hurt our country.”
