Two women with smarts, deep curiosity and a no-nonsense rapport as hosts. Some of the Golden State’s most connected reporters and influential guests. Thirty minutes of serious-fun news. Stir it all together and you get CapRadio’s newest show on politics and policy: California State of Mind.
First launched in October in the runup to the 2020 election, the weekly production of CapRadio News and CalMatters is gearing up to guide us through a potential gubernatorial recall and the state’s struggles to distribute the COVID vaccine and unemployment benefits.
Now, starting Friday, CapRadio’s newest podcast joins our broadcast schedule, shining a light on the politics and policies of our nation-state of 40 million people. It’ll run each Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
As a result, our Friday air window for All Things Considered will shorten slightly. NPR’s afternoon newsmagazine will now air from 4 - 6:30 p.m. Fridays, while continuing to run from 3:30 - 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Each week, hosts Nicole Nixon and Elizabeth Aguilera examine “The California Experience” through the lens of policy and politics. They’ll help you make sense of the world’s fifth-largest economy one headline at a time. Featuring top California reporters and guests who represent the diverse views in the state, the show explores healthcare, housing, jobs, social justice, the environment and more critical issues facing Californians.

The opening broadcast episode will feature California’s first surgeon general on the state’s handling of the pandemic.
California State of Mind debuts on the air Friday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on CapRadio’s news stations in Sacramento, Stockton-Modesto, Tahoe-Reno and Quincy. It will also air Fridays at 6:30 p.m. on our sister station North State Public Radio.
Meanwhile, here are two other updates about CapRadio’s program schedule:
- Sadly, we must bid farewell to Politics with Amy Walter. The highly popular Friday politics edition of The Takeaway is concluding February 26. Starting in March, Tanzina Vega will host The Takeaway five days a week. There will be no other change to our program schedule in the 12 p.m. hour.
- Our Body Politic will continue to run at 1 p.m. Fridays. The limited-run series exploring politics and the 2020 election cycle through the lens of women of color was originally set to end following Inauguration Day. But due to the unprecedented events following the election, the show’s run has been extended through July. That means we’re unable to restore the Friday edition of Fresh Air to our schedule just yet. We recognize this may come as a disappointment to some listeners, and we appreciate your understanding. You can listen to Fresh Air on demand here.
