Butte County storm damage | Redding riverfront plan | Education budget protest
As California continues to recover from multiple atmospheric rivers this winter, officials in Butte County estimate local damages in the millions of dollars. Also, the Redding City Council voted to hire a contractor to create a plan for developing its Sacramento riverfront property, and Black educators and students protested Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed education budget.

Chico State open forum | COVID-19 grant funds | Solitary confinement opposition
Chico State held an open forum Thursday for community members to give their feedback on the search for a new university president. Also, some businesses in Shasta County affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are now eligible for grant funding to relieve financial hardship, and a group of state lawmakers and advocacy organizations are trying to limit solitary confinement in California jails, prisons, and immigrant detention facilities.

Housing homeless residents | Fire survivor tax bill | Tribes hold day of action
A delegation from California is in Washington D.C. this week lobbying for a bill that would provide federal tax exemptions for wildfire survivors. Also, the Jesus Center plans to open a new building that will house unhoused families and seniors in June, and Native American tribes from across the state gathered at the state Capitol Tuesday for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Day of Action.

Black History Month | Pandemic food assistance | Tree mortality survey
February is Black History Month, and colleges across the North State are holding events and workshops to celebrate. Also, low-income Californians will soon have their grocery budgets slashed due to the end of a pandemic assistance program, and a government survey found that more than 36 million trees died in California last year.

Reimagining Chico’s downtown | Housing projects funded | Addressing hate crimes
The Chico City Council last week voted to develop right-of-way alternatives for the downtown core. Also, several affordable housing projects in the North State were awarded grants from the state’s Department of Housing and Development, and a California bill aims to reduce anti-Asian attacks in public spaces.

State of emergency expanded | Safe Space shelter closes | Storing storm water
Gov. Gavin Newsom Sunday expanded a state of emergency to include six additional counties. Also, Chico nonprofit Safe Space ended their seasonal operations last week, and officials who manage reservoirs in California are working to strike a balance between holding water in storage and maintaining room in reservoirs for more stormwater.
