Blue Dot: Groundwater problems and solutions: from paleo valleys to monitoring the resource from space

Host Dave Schlom takes us into the fascinating and vitally important world of groundwater science. Journalist and author of the book Water Always Wins introduces us to the concept of paleo valleys and introduces us to Dr. Graham Fogg, Emeritus Professor of Hydrogeology at UC Davis.

Fogg is the star of the show as he takes us on a groundwater 101 lesson and explains why ancient buried river valleys are the perfect places to store water. To conclude the show, we take a look at the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite mission which monitors groundwater from Earth orbit with GRACE Follow On Project Scientist Felix Landerer.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
