Congress to consider sweeping wildfire policy recommendations | Shasta County shifts to electronic ballots after months fighting for a hand-count | New public health officer appointed in Shasta County
A federal commission on wildfires has made extensive policy recommendations to Congress. Among them: putting good fire back in the natural landscape and developing a strong workforce to do so. Also, Shasta County will no longer be moving toward hand counting ballots in the upcoming election, and after the position of health officer sat vacant for nearly a year and half in Shasta County, the board of supervisors voted last week to appoint local family doctor James Mu to the position who notably opposed state COVID-19 mandates during the pandemic.

IRS announces one more month for Californians to file taxes | Shasta County to vote on potential new public health officer | New law will give health care workers a $25 minimum wage
If you live in California and you’ve been stressing about getting your taxes in, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Yesterday the IRS gave Californians another month to file taxes. Also, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors will meet today to potentially vote on a new county public health officer, and nearly half a million health care workers in California will get a pay boost next year under a new law raising the industry’s minimum wage.

Interview: Shasta County ballot hand-counting controversy | City Chico Council to meet after last meeting canceled due to audio issues | California selected as ‘hydrogen hub’
The Shasta County Board of Supervisors is doubling down on their opposition to a new state law barring hand-counting ballots in elections in counties with more than 1,000 registered voters. NSPR spoke with the county clerk and registrar of voters about the difficulty of hand-counting and the ban. Also, The Chico City Council will reconvene tomorrow after the last meeting was canceled due to issues with the chamber’s audio system, and California is set to receive more than $1 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy in a nationwide campaign to build regional hydrogen energy hubs.

Chico requests special election for Valley’s Edge | Syringe access program in Chico asked to halt operations | Willows finalizes service contract with Glenn County Sheriff's Office
The North Valley Harm Reduction Coalition has been asked by the city of Chico to cease operation of its syringe access program after being issued a notice of violating an ordinance that bans syringe exchange programs or “anything similar to them.” Also, a request to Butte County for a March 2024 special election for Valley’s Edge was requested by the Chico City Council, and the city of Willows finalized a contract with the Glenn County Sheriff's Office to provide law enforcement services through the end of this year.

Butte supervisors to discuss annual fee adjustment, library grant funding | Concerns over potential Shasta County gun range | More rain headed to the North State
Costs for building fees in Butte County could go up after today’s board of supervisors meeting. Also, today the Shasta County Board of Supervisors will discuss building an over 150-acre shooting range that’s been met with scrutiny and concerns over a potential conflict of interest, and the National Weather Service says there’s up to a 50% chance of rain tomorrow — the Sierra and the foothills have the best chances.

Transgender student privacy | Delta-Bay watershed crisis plan | Boil water advisory in Durham
School districts across the state have been debating if and when school officials should notify parents if their student identifies as transgender without the student's consent. Several lawsuits have had contradictory rulings. NSPR spoke with an attorney with the ACLU of Northern California to learn more about what the rulings mean for students. Also, new controversial plans to aid the ecological crisis in the Delta-Bay watershed were unveiled by California water regulators last week, and a boil advisory has been issued for Durham Water Irrigation District customers through today.

Wildfire tax bill delayed | Willows could lose law enforcement services | Fat Bear Week
For years, wildfire survivors have asked the federal government to stop taxing settlement money from disastrous wildfires, and a bill doing just that is getting bipartisan support. But recent turmoil in Congress has delayed it. Also, the city of Willows in Glenn County may soon be without police and animal control services after a contract with the sheriff’s office expired in June, and yesterday kicked off Fat Bear Week, which recognizes brown bear and salmon conservation efforts across the country.
