Blue Dot: Science Diplomacy in the Persian Gulf and ENSO

The Persian Gulf from Orbit.
The Persian Gulf from Orbit.

Dave investigates an effort in the Persian Gulf to bring scientists together to protect and further study this politically and ecologically diverse region.

Guests are scientist and journalist Clare Fieseler, the Sandra Day O'Connor fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, and marine scientist Nadia Fawzi from the University of Basrah in Iraq. In the final segment of the show, Dave visits NOAA climate scientist and blogger Emily Becker for a primer on ENSO -- the El Nino Southern Oscillation -- to find out what El Nino and La Nina affect global weather patterns.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
