Host Dave Schlom is joined by guests from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of San Diego to profile the ocean science being done at one of the world's most important and historic places to study our blue planet.

Two young researchers profile their work at the venerable institution. Dave is joined by seagoing oceanographer Sophia Merrifield to talk about her voyages of scientific discovery aboard ships like the US Navy's RV Sally Ride, which, along with the RV Roger Revelle, is operated by Scripps.

Then geophysicist Jamin Greenbaum discusses his work in Antarctica, documenting how our warming planetary oceans are melting ice there, a significant factor in future sea level rise.

Finally, Dave is joined by Robert Monroe, author of the 2021 illustrated book Scripps Institution of Oceanography, to talk about the history of the La Jolla, California-based facility, which dates back to the early 20th century.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
