Host Dave Schlom is joined by British humorist and financial writer Dominic Frisby. In his new book, The Secret History of Gold: Myth, Money, Politics and Power (Pegasus Books), Frisby weaves an amazing story starting before the Earth was even formed (yes, gold is older than the solar system!) up to the modern day, where gold is seen as a hedge against volatile currency values.

Gold has always been a source of wealth, and from myths like the story of Midas and Jason and the Argonauts in the ancient world, through the invention of coinage and jewelry, element number 79 on the periodic table has driven the rise and fall of empires. Though not particularly useful other than as jewelry or in some minor industrial applications, gold is nevertheless the basis of wealth.

From mysteries of what happened to Nazi and Japanese gold hoards at the end of World War 2 to the story of how Americans were finally allowed to possess gold (other than jewelry) in 1975, Dave and Dominic will lead you on an adventure guaranteed to arouse your inner prospector!

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
