Five people were shot early Saturday morning at a house on West 5th Street in Chico, according to the Chico Police Department.

The department reported in a press release that all five gunshot victims were taken to the hospital for immediate medical care and that three of the victims have since been released.

In an email sent to the campus community Saturday afternoon, California State University, Chico President Gayle Hutchinson said that at least two of the victims are Chico State students.

“We know that this shocking incident brings grief to our entire community and concern for everyone’s well-being and safety. As we wait to learn more about what happened, we ask that everyone extend care and compassion to one another,” she said.

Hutchinson said that Chico State’s Student Affairs staff are reaching out to the students, their families, and friends to provide support.

The university is also providing 24/7 counseling to those who have been emotionally affected by this event and are being directed to the WellCat Counseling Center.

The Chico Police Department said its detectives are still investigating the shooting and following up on several leads.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Chico Police Department at 530-895-4911.
