What Does a Will Do?

Only you know the special circumstances of your family members and heirs, so it is important to discuss these factors with your estate planning attorney. However, some common functions of a will include:

  • Names the executor or personal representative of your estate
  • Gives your property to those you choose, including gifts to nonprofit organizations
  • Sets up trusts to save on taxes and provide financial management
  • Names a guardian for minor children, or caregivers for pets
  • Ensures lifetime care for a child with a disability
  • Sets guidelines for distributions if you and your spouse die at the same time

Bequest Language and Legal Info

Planning for the future and creating the legacy you wish to leave is one of the most effective ways to ensure a lasting impact. Making a gift in your will or living trust, known as a bequest, can guarantee that your legacy endures. Your gift may be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder after all other provisions are specified.

Below is suggested language to use when drafting your bequest.

Sample Language

"I, [Name], of [City, State, Zip Code], give [Particular Asset; Fixed Dollar Amount; Percentage of the Estate; or Description of Property] to [North State Public Radio.]"

Please use the appropriate legal name and federal tax ID when making your gift.

If you have named NSPR in your will or trust, please let us know so we can ensure that your gift is used according to your wishes.
