Quick reads — Chico Chamber of Commerce calls on city to delay plan to raise sewer rates by 180%
The city says the rate increases are necessary to address an aging, neglected system
The Chico Chamber of Commerce is calling on the city to delay its plan to increase sewer rates sharply starting in the summer.
The City Council in March approved raising rates by 180% in the first year.
The chamber says the increases will hurt businesses and could immediately affect jobs and other operations. The group says it would like the city to consider raising rates more modestly over time and called on owners to attend the April 7 City Council meeting.
City officials say the steep year-one increase is necessary to upgrade aging, neglected infrastructure.
The county also revised its total measles cases this year downward from 10 to 9
Health officials in Shasta County say a measles outbreak that started there in January is "over."
The Health and Human Services Agency also revised the county’s total measles cases this year downward from 10 to nine.
The health department said on April 7 that further testing ruled out the disease for a case reported on March 23. That means the outbreak that started on Jan. 30 ended on March 30.
All the patients in the county have fully recovered.
Health officials say the measles vaccine is 97% effective with two doses and is the best way to protect yourself.
