Clearer picture of Chico City Council election results promised by Thursday night
Butte County expects to post new election results by the end of Thursday, its first update since Tuesday night.
The county announced the timing on its elections website. The update should include Chico’s City Council races, where progressives are holding on to leads that could shift the balance of power.
The totals will still be unofficial and could change as more ballots are counted. Butte County must certify election results by Dec. 3.
Man shot, injured by police after high-speed chase in Shasta County
Officers shot and wounded a man in Shasta County on Tuesday night after a chase that ended in Redding, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The incident began as deputies were investigating a report of a woman who was shot in the city of Shasta Lake. The Sheriff's Office says they caught up with the suspect's car and forced it to stop.
That's when the authorities say 32-year-old Reese Churulich got out and began firing at officers. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and faces charges including attempted murder.
Yuba-Sutter area and Colusa County's congressman will be a Democrat. But which one?
In the North State, California's 4th Congressional District was still too close to call on Wednesday. Returns from The Associated Press show challenger Eric Jones narrowly ahead of Congressman Mike Thompson.
Jones and Thompson are Democrats who've been vying for support in a district that added the Yuba-Sutter area and Colusa County, both of which lean Republican. Jones is a former venture capitalist in his 30s who said he'd take on the establishment, while Thompson is a 75-year-old moderate who’s served since 1999.
Jared Huffman wins CA's 2nd Congressional District
Democratic Representative Jared Huffman is heading back to Congress with some new North State communities to represent.
The Associated Press called California’s 2nd Congressional District race for Huffman over Republican challenger Robin Littau on Tuesday night.
Under Proposition 50’s new map, Huffman will represent Shasta, Siskiyou and Modoc counties starting in January. He campaigned on lowering the cost of living and protecting access to health care.
McGuire wins Congressional race, but results show geographic divide
The Associated Press has called California’s 1st Congressional District for Democrat Mike McGuire. McGuire calls it an overwhelming victory, adding that voters are tired of political chaos.
But the results tell a more complicated story. Republican James Gallagher leads in six counties, including Butte. McGuire leads in three Democratic-leaning counties added during redistricting.
All counties must certify results by Dec. 3.
Two Chico City Council members investigated over potential conflicts of interest
The California Fair Political Practices commission is investigating two Chico City Council members over potential conflicts of interest.
The pair of complaints allege Addison Winslow and Bryce Goldstein should have recused themselves from voting on a controversial downtown revitalization project because they leased offices in the project area.
The complaint against Goldstein also argues she should not have voted because she was working for CalTrans, which would have funded the project.
Butte County walnut harvest down, but growers could see higher prices
Butte County's most valuable crop — walnuts — is seeing a smaller harvest this year.
The Butte County Farm Bureau says growers are harvesting 15 to 20% fewer walnuts of the Chandler variety, likely because of heat earlier this spring.
But the smaller crop could actually benefit farmers. Last year's abundant harvest drove prices down, while this year's tighter supply could mean higher prices for growers.
Early ballot returns are up in Butte County ahead of Election Day
Butte County voters are returning their mail-in ballots faster than during the last midterm election. In Shasta County, the pace is about the same.
State figures released over the weekend show about 30% of mail ballots have been returned in Butte County. That's compared with 25% in Shasta County.
But that's only the early voting picture: Voters can still cast ballots through tomorrow evening, and mail ballots arriving after Election Day will also be counted.
