NSPR News Brief: April 14

Here's your daily briefing...

Homes (eventually) for the homeless: California’s mentally ill and chronically homeless may eventually get some shelter and care as county officials around the state prepare spending plans for money recently dedicated to the purpose. The funds, from a 2004 ballot measure were redirected by the legislature. Officials estimate it will be 2019 before any structures are available.

Record rainy season: It’s official. The 2016/2017 winter has been declared the wettest on record for the Northern Sierra region by the state’s Department of Water Resources. According to official measurements, nearly 90 inches of precipitation fell there — the highest ever recorded — erasing a record that has stood since the winter of 1982/1983. It’s a little less impressive when put in perspective though. The amount equal the annual average received in Newport Oregon.

Chico cops cleared: After an investigation, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey has found two Chico police officers not criminally liable for the shooting death of an apparently mentally disturbed 25-year-old man last month.

And on the California Report: Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) called for congressional scrutiny into the decision by President Donald Trump to drop the so-called “mother of all bombs” on a purported guerilla cave complex on Afghan-Pakistani border. A hearing was set for this morning as San Francisco and San Jose try to take on the Trump Administration over plans to slash federal funding for jurisdictions declaring themselves ‘sanctuaries’ for undocumented immigrants. California considers declaring itself a ‘sanctuary state.’ And more on the record rainy season.
