Redding Officials Set To Declare Local Emergency Due To Carr Fire

With parts of the city in ruins, elected leaders gathering this morning to proclaim a local emergency in Redding. The designation will suspend competitive bidding requirements, allowing expedited repairs.

According to City Attorney Barry DeWalt, declaring a local emergency will also make it easier for Redding to receive state aid, along with federal funds, should they be made available.

Brad Alexander, a spokesman for the state Office of Emergency Services said officials’ primary concern has been fighting the fire, evacuations and restoring electricity once danger passes.

“We’ll soon be on our way with assessing the level of damage and the accuracy of damage to critical infrastructure public infrastructure and people’s homes, but that’s still pretty a ways off,” Alexander said.

Governor Brown declared a State of Emergency in Shasta County Thursday. President Trump authorized the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

CalFire has scheduled a public meeting about the fire for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Alps Performing Art Center in Weaverville.

An interactive and continually updated map showing damage sustained by individual properties during the fire has been established. It can be accessed at
