Feeling pressure and pending threats of lawsuits, the Chico Unified School District (CUSD) intends to adopt district elections for its board of trustees.
The California Voting Rights Act of 2001, made it easier to allege that citywide elections are discriminatory. As a result, school districts and cities across the state are switching to district elections.
This includes CUSD, which said it was advised by the California School Boards Association, a trade group, to change to districts. Currently, CUSD school board members are chosen citywide.
The school board has called a meeting to discuss options at 5 p.m. on March 4 at the district’s office, 1167 7th St.
