Shasta County expects to receive about 2,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine next week.

The county will also get an additional 975 doses to distribute to surrounding counties.

Kerri Schuette, a public information officer for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency says state and federal approvalsare needed before the vaccine can be administered. As of Friday, the timing on those was unclear, but health care workers and nursing home residents will be the first to receive the vaccine once they are authorized for emergency use.

“Right now, we are really happy that our health care workers who are working long hours – they’re being exposed to a lot of people – we’re really happy that they are going to start getting some protection,” Schuette said.

Schuette says the county expects to receive an additional vaccine shipment in about two weeks.

That will include 2,100 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
