Chico State To Host 2021 Graduation Virtually

CSU Chico

California State University, Chico will be holding its commencement ceremonies virtually this year. University officials notified the campus community of the plan in an email Thursday.

Stephen Cummins, director of university public engagement, said the decision may be disappointing but is the safest option.

“We have about 3400 eligible grads. When we last surveyed our students, almost 35 percent of them were not in Chico,” he said. “Given we’re in the red tier, the travel guidelines for non-essential travel, the fact that we know that if they are coming back into our community, it’s a risk for themselves to travel, and then it is a risk for our community.”

Virtual events will feature more than thirty celebrations. Some departments and clubs may also choose to host small gatherings in Chico.

“There’s no official ceremony being held on campus,” Cummins said. “But there are going to be lots of in-person events, our senior send-offs, there will be some small groups that choose to have special culminating events.”

Ceremonies will take place from May 20 through May 23.
