California State Parks is celebrating the new year by hosting guided hikes in more than 60 state parks.
First Day Hikes are an annual and national effort to encourage people to start off the new year surrounded by nature. Hiking is a healthy way to start the new year, according to state park officials.
One of the guided hikes will be in Shasta County at Castle Crags State Park.
The hike starts at the park’s entrance and follows the Flume Trail out to the Flume Environmental Campground. It is about three miles long and is expected to take about five hours.
Park officials said it is a gentle hike with planned stops to discuss the park’s history, geology and forest health.
The hike is limited to 30 participants. Visitors are recommended to bring hiking shoes, but if it snows, the hike will turn into a snowshoe hike. It will be cancelled in the event of road closures or weather emergencies.
Before attending any First Day Hike, participants are recommended to plan ahead by checking their state park’s status, taking any precautions beforehand and having a backup plan in case the hike is full.
Officials encouraged participants to dress in layers, wear appropriate shoes and bring enough food and water for the trip.
