If Redding’s PBS station KIXE isn’t able to secure major new funding, station management says it could go dark by spring.
The TV station recently reduced staff after losing more than 40% of its budget when federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was pulled earlier this year.
“We’ve actually had some really strong summer months in terms of funding and fundraising … the bigger question is how long we can sustain that.”- Rob Keenan, KIXE general manager
“We’re not closing our doors yet, and I’m hoping that’s not where we end up, but it is a reality because that was an awful, awful big chunk of change to lose from the federal government,” said KIXE General Manager Rob Keenan.
He said the station has had to let go of a part-time employee and close four vacant positions. That leaves 10 staff members.
“We've actually had some really strong summer months in terms of funding and fundraising because people are worried about us, which is really, really helpful,” Keenan said. “But ultimately, I guess, the bigger question is how long we can sustain that.”
Keenan said KIXE is looking for outside funding sources and also trying new ways to serve the region, like offering studio space for public meetings and telling more North State-centric stories through local productions.
“We're actually reaching out to local agencies and organizations and nonprofits and helping them to promote their activities as well. And Mr. Rogers here, trying to be a better neighbor and work with our local partners and just serve the community better,” Keenan said.
For now, the station’s goal is to maintain as much programming as possible. But Keenan they’ll need to line up outside funding soon.
