Over 10,000 PG&E customers across the North State could lose power starting Friday, as gusty winds and dry conditions raise the risk of wildfire, the utility says.
Shasta and Tehama counties face the biggest potential shutoffs, with more than 9,000 customers combined, according to PG&E’s forecast.
The areas potentially affected are scattered around Redding and west of Interstate 5.
Shutoffs could also affect parts of Butte, Glenn and Colusa counties over the weekend and into Monday.
Why is PG&E considering shutting off power?
PG&E spokesperson Paul Moreno said the concern is wind blowing branches into power lines and sparking fires in dry grass and brush.
“We have found damage in previous events that, had the power lines been live, could have very easily ignited a wildfire,” Moreno said.
What should customers do if their power goes out?
PG&E says it will open community resource centers where people can get Wi-Fi, water and snacks.
Moreno said evacuation go-bags will also be available at some locations.
Customers can look up their address and check for shutoff updates on PG&E’s website.
