Blue Dot: Eclipse 2024 and more: Preparing for the next great American solar eclipse

Gordon Telepun

Host Dave Schlom is joined by eclipse guru Gordon Telepun to talk about the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

While that may seem a ways off, anyone who made plans to view the 2017 "Great American Eclipse" knows that now is the time to start planning. Dr. Telepun (a plastic surgeon by profession and eclipse hero by choice) has devoted himself to helping others make the most out of experiencing total eclipses of the Sun, one of nature's greatest spectacles.

The creator of the Solar Eclipse Timer app has a new e-book out, Eclipse 2024 and More! How to Enjoy, Observe and Photograph a Total Solar Eclipse. And the subtitle puts things in perspective, the most important thing to do is to enjoy the variety of phenomena that accompany a total eclipse of the Sun from the hushing of birdsong, to strange lighting effects and of course, the awe-inspiring spectacle in the sky that leaves many first-timers in tears.

The key is to get into the path of totality, a narrow band that will stretch from the US-Mexico border to the Northeastern US while passing through many densely populated areas. Find out how YOU can be a part of something that Dave insists, "Everyone should experience at least once in their lives."

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
