Blue Dot investigates the concept of the Blue Economy, using ocean resources in a more responsible, sustainable way as being practiced in the small coastal town of Fort Bragg, California.
Host Dave Schlom is joined by Kate Fishman from the Mendocino Voice, along with veteran journalist Frank Hartzell who has reported extensively on the topic. Kate then joins Dave to co-host interviews with Anna Neumann, the Harbor Master for Noyo Harbor.
The harbor is home to both commercial and recreational fishing boats as well as a popular tourist section of restaurants that serve freshly caught seafood. The final guest is Michael Hicks, Director of Development for the Noyo Center for Marine Science which is becoming an active partner in the blueing of the Mendocino coastal economy through its diverse ocean education programs.
The Mendocino Coast is one of the most beautiful and diverse regions of California and has been facing severe water problems due to the prolonged California drought. Using wave power to desalinate water is just one of the innovative solutions being pursued by this gem of the North Coast.
