Federal grant money for wildfire recovery short of funding requests

The county of Butte, town of Paradise and city of Chico have been allocated hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grant money appropriated by Congress for 2018 wildfire recovery projects. But county officials say the funding is glaringly short of the amount requested by communities recovering from wildfire.

Chico settles lawsuit over journalist’s requests for police records

An investigative journalist in Chico is drawing praise from families of people killed by law enforcement in Butte County. The journalist, Dave Waddell, also announced he settled a lawsuit he filed against the city of Chico for records in several fatal police shootings. The city agreed to pay Waddell’s attorney’s fees and costs — more than $43,000 — and he says it released hundreds of records in response to the lawsuit.

California moves toward banning sale of new gas-powered cars

The California Air Resources Board plans to adopt regulations today requiring all new vehicles sold in the state to emit zero emissions by 2035. With these new regulations, California will become the first state in the country to create a concrete roadmap toward banning the sale of new gas-powered cars.

Sephora agrees to pay California $1.2M in consumer data case

Sephora, one of the largest cosmetic retailers in the world, has agreed to pay the state of California $1.2 million in penalties, resolving allegations the company illegally sold consumer data. State Attorney General Rob Bonta says Sephora violated the California Consumer Privacy Act.
