Group warns of anti-Asian rhetoric ahead of midterm election

A Northern California-based advocacy group is calling out the dangers of language that scapegoats Asians and Asian Americans as the midterm election gets closer. The group says many candidates are focusing on anti-Chinese rhetoric, which results in the targeting of Asian Americans, including those who are not of Chinese descent.

State crackdown on fentanyl leads to more than 200 arrests since April 2021

California Attorney General Rob Bonta Wednesday gave an update on work by the state Department of Justice (DOJ) to fight the fentanyl crisis. He said since April last year, law enforcement seized 4 million fentanyl pills, almost 900 pounds of fentanyl powder and made more than 200 arrests. Bonta also said the DOJ secured nearly $8 million in its current budget to help bolster enforcement.

Polls suggest California sports betting measures will be defeated

The leaders of the two biggest online sports betting companies seemed to admit defeat when it comes to Proposition 27, which would legalize online sports betting in California. Two recent polls showed it going down to defeat by a substantial margin. Proposition 26 — which would legalize sports betting at tribal casinos — also trailed in the same polls.

California Coastal Commission approves desalination plant

A proposed desalination plant southeast of Los Angeles was approved by California's Coastal Commission Thursday, according to The Associated Press. The AP reports the plant could turn up to 5 million gallons of seawater into drinkable water each day.
