Chico library shooting leaves two dead, police chief confirms
Two people have died after a gunman opened fire inside the Chico branch of the Butte County Library on Monday, Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge said at a press conference.
Another person was injured, and a suspect was in custody, Aldridge said.
A possible motive was not immediately known, but police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community, Aldridge said.
“The incident this evening was obviously very sad, traumatic for a lot of people, very traumatic for our community, and my heart and prayers go out to the families of those involved,” he said.
Police received a 911 call about 5:10 p.m. Monday reporting shots fired inside the library at East First and Sherman avenues, Aldridge said, adding that “gunshots” and “people screaming” could be heard on the open emergency line.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, ran out the back of the library when police entered but was apprehended “shortly thereafter” because officers had set up a perimeter around the building, Aldridge said.
The two people killed were adults, Aldridge said. The additional person who was hurt was a juvenile and suffered a “minor injury,” he said. The names of the people killed were not released pending notification of next of kin.
The police chief said the authorities don’t “feel like there’s any further threat to the public” but are continuing to look into whether there are any other people “involved in this case.”
He said no shots were fired between police and the suspect.
The FBI has offered to help the investigation, Aldridge said. Other local agencies, including the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office.
An area around the library was closed to traffic as investigators collected evidence.
County officials announced on social media that all Butte County Library branches will be closed on Tuesday.
More information was expected to be released Monday night and Tuesday.

The Chico Enterprise-Record reports that Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge confirmed the two deaths. NSPR has not independently confirmed that information.
Aldridge is expected to provide an update at the library shortly as authorities continue investigating.
Congressman James Gallagher said on social media that he is "aware and monitoring" the situation. He added that he is "praying" for those affected by what he described as "another senseless shooting."
NSPR has a reporter at the scene. The area around the library remains heavily secured. Chico Police, the Butte County Sheriff's Office, SWAT teams and the fire department are on scene, and First and Sherman avenues remain closed to traffic.
Chico Police spokesperson Kayla Gates previously confirmed that one suspect is in custody. She said investigators do not believe there are any outstanding suspects.

Power outage affects homes around Lower Bidwell Park and the Barber neighborhood, PG&E says
A power outage around downtown Chico is affecting more than 800 customers as of 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
PG&E's website reports the outage is affecting 855 customers generally around Lower Bidwell Park and the Barber neighborhood off Park Avenue.
The utility says a crew is working to restore power. The website says power is estimated to be restored by 6:30 p.m.
A cause of the outage was not listed.
The outage comes as gusty winds and dry conditions have prompted a red flag warning for much of the Sacramento Valley, including Chico.
PG&E implemented intentional Public Safety Power Shutoffs in parts of Colusa, Glenn and Tehama counties on Wednesday.
Chico State police chief to retire, lead Butte College academy
Chico State is looking for a new campus police chief.
University officials announced Tuesday that Chief Chris Nicodemus will retire July 1. He's moving to Butte College, where campus officials say he'll lead the law enforcement academy.
Nicodemus has led Chico State's police department since 2022, first as interim chief and then in the permanent role.
The university says it's working to name an interim chief and will launch a nationwide search later this summer.

National Weather Service issues red-flag warning for the Sacramento Valley from Wednesday to Thursday
PG&E says parts of Colusa, Glenn, Sutter and Tehama counties could have their power shut off later this week as fire weather returns to the Sacramento Valley.
The utility’s Public Safety Power Shutoff forecast shows elevated risk in those counties from Wednesday through Friday. The shutoffs are meant to reduce the chance of power lines sparking wildfires during dangerous weather.
The possible shutoffs come as the National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a red-flag warning from late Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon for parts of the valley.
Forecasters expect dry north winds of 15 to 25 miles an hour, with gusts up to 40 miles an hour. Humidities could drop as low as 9%.
The weather service says the highest fire risk will be along and west of Interstate 5. Any fires that start could spread quickly.
PG&E says customers should check their address through the utility’s outage center to see whether their home or business could be affected.
California gas prices dip, but relief may be slow to reach drivers
California drivers are paying a little less at the pump.
According to AAA, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has fallen to $5.99, about two cents lower than a week ago.
Prices are lower in Butte and Shasta counties, where regular gas is averaging about $5.83 per gallon. But drivers in some rural northern counties are paying more. In Trinity County, the average price is $6.22 a gallon, due in part to higher transportation costs.
CBS News reports gas prices are expected to remain elevated until oil begins flowing through the Strait of Hormuz again. Even then, analysts say it could take several months before consumers see significant additional relief at the pump.
Huffman moves toward November election in newly redrawn District 2
Democratic Congressman Jared Huffman is projected to advance to the November general election in California’s 2nd Congressional District, according to The Associated Press.
Unofficial election returns show Republican Robin Littau leading the remaining candidates in the race for the second spot on the November ballot.
The contest has drawn added attention in the North State because California's redrawn congressional map expanded the district eastward into Shasta, Siskiyou and Modoc counties. The changes brought more conservative inland voters into a district long anchored along the North Coast.
Election results remain unofficial and additional ballots are still being counted.
Gallagher on track to win special election, advance to November
Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher appears on track to win the special election to complete the late Doug LaMalfa’s term in Congress, according to a projection from The Associated Press.
Speaking with NSPR at his election night watch party in Chico on Tuesday, Gallagher said his priorities in Washington would include advancing the proposed Sites Reservoir project, supporting efforts to reopen Glenn Medical Center in Willows and lowering energy costs.
In the regular primary for California’s newly redrawn 1st Congressional District, Gallagher also appears likely to advance to the November general election alongside Democratic state Sen. Mike McGuire, according to the AP projection. McGuire declined an interview request from NSPR on election night.
Meanwhile, Chico Democrat Audrey Denney told NSPR she is grateful for the support she received during her three campaigns for Congress. Denney said elected leaders should remain focused on the people affected by their decisions.
Ballots are still being counted, and election results remain unofficial.
