The brain is all about the survival of the being. To help us survive, during the day our brains create memories that are consolidated and adapted during Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. But if a trauma occurs, sometimes the brain can't consolidate and adapt memories. If this occurs repeatedly it can lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

The Northern California Trauma Recovery Network is providing pro bono sessions of EMDR therapy to first responders and victims of the Carr Fire.

Recently the Northern California Trauma Recovery Network was created in the North State that is made up of therapists specializing in a therapy technique called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing or EMDR Therapy to prevent PTSD from developing. The organization is providing five free sessions of EMDR to residents and first responders of the Carr Fire. NSPR's Sarah Bohannon spoke with therapist Pennisue Hignell who is the coordinator of the newly established network and explained how EMDR works.
